How It Works

How PC Performance Calculator estimates FPS, bottlenecks and power draw, and why real-world results can differ.

What this tool does

PC Performance Calculator estimates gaming performance — FPS, CPU/GPU balance, VRAM/RAM usage and power draw — for a CPU, GPU, RAM and game combination you choose. It does not run your game, benchmark your machine, or collect any hardware telemetry. It compares relative performance profiles and scales a set of reference figures accordingly.

The estimation model

Every CPU and GPU in our database carries a synthetic 0–100 estimated relative performance index, derived from verified public specifications and typical gaming performance patterns for that hardware class — not from running actual benchmarks. Every game carries editorial reference points describing how GPU-bound and CPU-bound it typically is.

When you calculate: we scale the GPU's reference point by your resolution, preset, ray tracing and upscaling choices to get a "GPU-bound" frame rate, scale the CPU's reference point similarly to get a "CPU-bound" ceiling, and report the lower of the two as your estimated average FPS — the same logic a real bottleneck follows. 1% and 0.1% lows are derived from the average using typical frame-time-variance ratios, not measured directly.

Why real-world results will differ

  • Drivers. GPU driver updates routinely change performance, sometimes by double-digit percentages in specific games.
  • Game patches. Developers optimize (or occasionally regress) performance with updates; a game's demand profile shifts over its lifecycle.
  • Background processes. Browsers, overlays, recording software, anti-cheat and OS background tasks all consume CPU/GPU/RAM headroom.
  • Thermal throttling. Inadequate cooling or a restrictive laptop chassis can force a CPU or GPU to run below its rated boost clocks.
  • RAM speed and configuration. Beyond total capacity, timing, frequency and single- vs dual-channel operation all have measurable (if usually secondary) effects.
  • Per-game engine behavior. The same CPU/GPU pair can be CPU-limited in one game and GPU-limited in another, depending entirely on how that game's engine distributes work.

Because of all of the above, treat every number on this site as an estimate, useful for comparison and planning — never as a guarantee of the frame rate you'll see on your specific machine.

How we label our data

We distinguish four categories throughout the site:

  • Verified specification — sourced from public manufacturer documentation (cores, clocks, VRAM, TDP, etc.).
  • Estimated value — our model's calculated output (FPS, utilization, power draw).
  • Sample / demo data — a small number of illustrative benchmark rows, clearly marked, standing in for a future real benchmark database.
  • Unavailable — a field the manufacturer hasn't published; we leave it blank rather than guess.

Frequently asked questions

They're directional, not exact — useful for comparing hardware and spotting likely bottlenecks, but not a substitute for a real benchmark of your specific machine, drivers and game version.

A bottleneck is whichever component — CPU or GPU — runs out of headroom first and caps your frame rate below what the other component could otherwise deliver.

Yes. GPU workload scales sharply with resolution while CPU workload per frame stays roughly constant, so the same PC can be CPU-limited at 1080p and GPU-limited at 4K.

We scale each game's editorial reference FPS by your CPU's and GPU's relative performance index, then apply resolution, preset, ray tracing and upscaling multipliers, and take the lower of the CPU- and GPU-bound results.

Trust them as an estimate for comparison and planning, clearly labeled as such — not as a guarantee. We never present sample or estimated data as a real, measured benchmark.
